You are 100% correct. Pie on my face, I should have read the gnu tar manual more thoroughly :-( . Fortunately, System Rescue CD has both tar 1.2.3 and xz-utils, so the J options should work.

The -J flag just allows the use of the xz program as a filter. `tar`
doesn't actually contain any support for the compression format
internally. You still need xz itself to actually process xz-compressed
[omitting your other question, as I don't have a response]
